How to Fix a Weak Flushing Toilet

There's nothing more frustrating than a slow-flushing toilet. Maybe you have experienced having to hold down your flush handle to get a powerful flush. Maybe you have to jiggle the handle to get your toilet flapper to seal properly.

This is an easy fix. In some cases, this may indicate that your toilet needs the correct toilet flapper, your fill valve isn't working, or your toilet might have a partial clog. If your toilet is using an adjustable flapper, it may be necessary to make a few tweaks.

Does this describe your toilet issue?

Step 1: Test Your Flapper

The flapper is an essential component of your toilet that controls the water flow from the tank to the bowl. If it's not working correctly, your toilet may not flush properly. Here are some common causes of flapper issues:

  1. Too much slack in the chain: Ensure the chain connecting the flush handle to the flapper is appropriately adjusted. The flapper won't lift enough to allow sufficient water flow if it is too loose.

  2. Adjustable flapper settings are wrong: Some flappers have adjustable settings that control how long they stay open during a flush. Check if yours is set correctly according to your toilet's specifications.

  3. Incorrect flapper: Ensure you have the right flapper for your toilet model. Using the wrong one can lead to incomplete flushing.

How to Fix

  1. Shut off the water supply to your toilet and flush until the water is fully drained.
  2. Drain any remaining water from the tank by holding down the flush handle.
  3. Disconnect the flapper chain from the flush lever and remove the old flapper.
  4. Clean the flush valve opening and surrounding area to remove mineral deposits or debris.
  5. Install the new flapper, making sure it sits evenly and creates a proper seal.
  6. Reconnect the flapper chain to the flush lever, leaving a little slack for smooth movement.
  7. Turn off the water supply to refill the tank and check if the flapper seals tightly.
