What Size Flapper Do I Need?
You discovered there are some differences in flush valve systems and that toilets sizes can vary. An easy reference is to look at the size of the flush valve drain opening in the bottom of the tank. If it’s about the size of an orange or baseball, you need a 2 inch seal. If it looks more like the size of a grapefruit or softball, you need a jumbo 3 inch seal. You can also measure the flush valve opening to determine what flapper size you need.

STEP 1: Toilets vary in size and shape, as do their flush valve systems. Flappers comes in two sizes, two inch and three inch. A majority of toilets will use the two inch flapper; however three inch flappers have become popular in recent years and can be found in newer toilets manufactured since 2005. An easy reference for determining your toilet’s flapper size is to look at the flush valve drain opening at the bottom of your tank.
STEP 2: If your flapper is the size of a baseball or an orange, your toilet requires a two inch flapper.
STEP 3: If your flapper is the size of a softball or grapefruit, your toilet requires a three inch flapper.
