Start by checking your flapper or flush valve seal. A slow leak from either of these parts is the most common cause of a running toilet. As water slowly leaks from the tank, it triggers the fill valve to turn on to replace the lost water. If replacing the flapper or seal doesn't fix it, replace the fill valve next.
